    • 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM
    • Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary, Easthampton, MA
    • 12
    Register

Join Bill Randolph and Amanda Kallenbach to explore the diverse habitats surrounding the nature center including flood plain forest, marshes, the Connecticut River oxbow and grasslands in search of migrating hawks, sparrows, warblers and waterfowl. Plan on traveling 2–3 miles on mostly flat, uneven terrain with a few muddy areas depending on rainfall. There's an option to climb a 25 foot spiral staircase to a bird observatory over Hulbert's Pond. It's a good idea to bring repellent for ticks and mosquitos. We'll meet in the Arcadia Nature Center parking lot at 127 Combs Road in Easthampton at 8:00 am (and plan to be out till 11:00ish). Restrooms are available in the Nature Center (opens at 9:00 am). Questions? Email Bill at warandolph@comcast.net or Amanda at amanda.kallenbach@gmail.com. Limited to 12 participants. (E/M)

    Field Trip designations:
    (E) – Easy conditions, fairly accessible for most, usually flat terrain on improved trails or roads.
    (M) – Moderately difficult, more challenging trail conditions, short steep sections, longer hikes involved.
    (S) – Strenuous conditions, muddy or rocky trails, steep sections, difficult footing in part.

Learning to identify hawks in flight from scratch is challenging. This simple, structured approach to learning field ID was developed before specialized field guides to hawks or mirrorless cameras became available. Migrating hawks usually are not seen or photographed as they look in most guides and social media photos. With this system, you can learn to identify many hawks you see at a distance and those you’ll see spectacularly well.

Paul Roberts founded the Eastern Mass Hawk Watch in 1976, establishing the watches at Wachusett Mountain, Mt. Watatic, and Plum Island. He led the Hawk Migration Association of North America (HMANA) for four years and the NorthEast Hawk Watch (NEHW) for over 20 years, but is still learning more about hawk identification and behavior every day.

Join Bill Randolph and Amanda Kallenbach in a day-long exploration of the different ecological zones of Mt. Greylock, the highest mountain in Massachusetts (3,491 feet). Beginning at the Visitor’s Center (1,600 feet), we'll drive slowly to the summit, with 3–4 stops and short hikes (about ¼ mile walks on mostly level, uneven ground), encountering the mountain's distinct plant communities, all of which attract different species of resident and migratory birds. We’ll look and listen for birds in pollinator meadows, abandoned fruit orchards, mixed deciduous forest and stunted alpine spruce. The summit offers expansive views of the region. We'll have lunch there and spend time watching migrating hawks and other raptors.

Meet at the Greylock Visitor's Center lot (30 Rockwell Rd. in Lanesborough) at 9:00 am. Carpooling from the Visitor's Center to the summit is encouraged, given limited pullouts. Bring water, a packed lunch and bug spray. Restrooms are available in the Visitor's Center (opens at 9:00 am). Extreme weather will cancel - watch your email for any updates. Questions? Email Bill at warandolph@comcast.net or Amanda at amanda.kallenbach@gmail.com. Limited to 12 participants. (E/M)

    • 5 sessions
    • Summit House, Skinner State Park, Hadley, MA

HBC Members will be on hand at the Summit House each morning Sept. 16–20 from 10:00 am to noon for identifying hawks and other migrants as they traverse the Holyoke Range. You can choose to walk up the auto road or on one of the trails, or drive directly up the auto road to the summit. There is an accessible ramp up to the porch where most of the hawk watching will occur, and restrooms are available. Please note that parking fees are in effect – $5 for MA residents and $20 for non-MA residents (status is determined by the vehicle license plate). Registration is not necessary for these "drop-in" watches. (E)

Hawks can be a tricky group of birds to identify due to their similar size and seemingly overlapping plumages. But if you're excited about hawks, September, the heart of hawk migration season in our area, is for you. During this online session we'll work to demystify this group of birds and give you concrete steps you can use in the field to identify hawks this fall and beyond! The presentation will be brief (30 minutes or less) and will allow for plenty of time for your questions on any birding related topic.

    • September 21, 2024
    • 8:45 AM - 11:00 AM
    • 195 Skinner State Park Rd, Hadley, MA 01035

September is the heart of hawk migration and there is no better place in the county to look for them than the summit house on Mount Holyoke. Hawk watches are notoriously tricky as so much depends on weather conditions, particularly the wind, but with any luck we'll see a decent show! Because DCR limits the number of people in a group (and we want to accommodate everyone) we will have two groups. One at the usual 8:45 time and a second at 12:45. We will meet at the parking lot at the summit. Consider carpooling as parking is limited.

    • East Meadows, Northampton, MA

Join Peggy MacLeod and Hobie Iselin to explore the Meadows’ diverse habitats for migrating songbird species such as sparrows, flycatchers, and late warblers. If seasonal rain has created wading puddles, we’ll look for shore birds such as sandpipers, lesser and greater yellowlegs, herons, and ducks. The trip will involve easy travel on flat ground, but prepare for mud or wet grass with appropriate footwear. Park on Old Ferry Road (off Route 9) on the west side of the airport runway in a grassy area a couple hundred yards beyond the Rt 91 underpass. To shorten walking time and distance, we may be able to carpool in 2–3 vehicles from the airport parking area to go farther out into the target areas. You are welcome to bring a folding chair, and a few may be provided. Please note there are no facilities or rest areas at this location. Questions? Contact sunraven99@gmail.com. Limited to 12 participants. (E)

Join Bill Randolph and explore the mixed conifer and deciduous forest, flooded forest wetland and Lake Fitzgerald in search of migrating warblers, waterfowl, raptors and herons. Plan on traveling about 3 miles on fairly flat, uneven terrain with some muddy areas depending upon recent rainfall. If time allows, there is an option to climb up to a bird observatory overlooking the marsh. It's a good idea to bring repellent for ticks and mosquitos. We will meet in the parking lot at the end of Cooke Ave (former Moose Lodge) in Northampton. Please note there are no facilities or rest areas at this location. Questions? Join Bill Randolph for an exploration of the different habitats at the Conte Refuge including an easy trek on a flat 1.2 mile fully accessible boardwalk trail for songbirds and warblers. Benches and lookout areas are situated along the trail. In the second half of the trip, we will explore the adjacent grasslands with views of the Holyoke Range and three marshes for waterfowl and raptors. In total, we will meander 2–3 miles on flat ground. Meet at the Silvio O. Conte parking lot at 69 Moody Bridge Road in Hadley – plenty of parking is available, plus a porta-potty. Questions?
