Join Betsy Higgins and Marcia Merithew for an exploration of Nash Hill Rd and the Henhawk trail. Expected highlights include Winter wrens, Northern and Louisiana waterthrush, Black-and-White, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Blue, and Pine warblers, Veery, and Wood thrush. There is a small pond off Nash Hill Road where we will scan for Hooded mergansers and Wood ducks.
We'll meet in the parking lot on Nash Hill Rd, where there is a gate to Henhawk trail. We'll walk a loop from Nash Hill Rd to a woods trail that connects to Henhawk trail to return to our cars. Nash Hill is a gravel road that is fairly level. The trail that connects to Henhawk trail is a typical woods trail; uneven with rocks and roots, with some possible wet areas. Henhawk trail is also rocky and uneven. Walking distance is approx. 2–2.75 miles.
To get to Nash Hill Rd from Rt 9 West in Williamsburg: turn right onto North St at the curve where Williamsburg Market and Tangle Chocolate are, then right at the stop sign onto East Main St. This becomes Nash Hill Rd and eventually becomes a gravel road. Keep going until you see a parking lot on the left with a gate to the start of the Henhawk trail.
Please note there are no facilities or seating areas at this location. Sturdy footwear, plus sun and tick/insect protection advised. Questions? Email Marcia at mmerithew@comcast.net or Betsy at higgins.elizabetha@gmail.com. Limited to 10 participants. (M)
