HBC's April Meeting: "Seeing in the Dark: Tracking Bird Migration with Weather Radar, Citizen Science, and Algorithms" with Dr. Dan Sheldon!

  • Tue, April 14, 2026
  • 7:15 PM - 9:30 PM
  • Hitchcock Center for the Environment, 845 West Street, Amherst MA

In the professor's own words: "I’ll talk about the science behind BirdCast, which uses weather radar to detect and predict how many birds are migrating (and in which direction they are flying) across the US. I’ll give an overview of how weather radar works and how it can be used to measure bird migration, including AI methods we developed to distinguish birds from precipitation. Time permitting, I’ll also discuss BirdFlow, a project that uses data from eBird to infer and predict species’ movements."

Dan Sheldon is a professor of computer science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research focuses on developing computational tools for large data sets, with applications in ecology, conservation, and other domains. He has contributed to the science behind BirdCast since 2007, helping develop methods to measure bird migration using weather radar and machine learning.
