Join Bill Randolph for an exploration of the Great Ponds in Hatfield, historically the mainstem of the Connecticut River that were cut off and formed an oxbow. Part of the ponds are protected through the Conte Refuge system as Core Habitat and Priority Wetlands. The ponds are bordered by extensive fallow potato fields that can attract different raptors and winter migrants such as snow buntings and sparrows. The ponds and floodplain forest are refuge to waterfowl, owls, and woodpeckers. Dress appropriately; this location can be windy and very cold. Plan on a 1–2 mile trek on mostly level, uneven ground that may be icy - shoe spikes can come in handy. Meet at Cow Bridge Road off of King Street in Hatfield. Please note there are no facilities or rest areas at this location. Questions? Email Bill at warandolph@comcast.net. Limited to 12 participants. (M)
